Bakersfield Anime fans are in Los Angeles on Friday for an Anime Expo. Only, some aren’t Twittering about Anime but rather about the media frenzy and show of force by the LAPD around Staples Center in relation to the death of pop star Michael Jackson.
On Friday morning, Oscar Arellano, of Bakersfield, wrote on Twitter that the “streets surrounding Staples center have been closed since Wednesday. Police are guarding 24/7.”
While the Anime Expo is at the Los Angeles Convention Center, that’s right next to the Staples Center in downtown L.A. “It’s a media frenzy,” wrote Stephanie in a text message from the event who took some photos of the madness along with Arellano.
Bakotopia’s Matt Munoz was at Michael Jackson’s Hollywood star on Wednesday. He said the area was packed where the star is located in front of the Mann’s Chinese Theater gift shop. “There was a Michael Jackson impersonator and a 60-year-old lady dressed up as Madonna in a wedding dress. It was a weird surreal scene. A lot of foreigners were there,” he said.
He said it was tough taking photos as well at the strange scene memorializing the dead pop star. “You had tons of dead flowers at the makeshift memorial. Cards, toys, and flowers. Around the star was one security guard. There were two lines cordoned off. One line wanted to kneel in front of the star. People were shoving, pushing. I got over there and wasn’t moving for anything. Cesareo Garasa took some shaky photos because he was pushed around.” Garasa is a drummer in Munoz band, Mento Buru.
Wait a minute. Pushed around? According to Munoz “some little old lady just pushed him [Garasa] out of the way.”
In the meantime, Face News registered at 10:27 a.m. for the Michael Jackson Memorial Service that’s to be held at Staples Center on Tuesday morning. Jackson fans can register for the random drawing for tickets to the event at www.staplescenter.com.
