Victim of a crime? Time to check in with the Bakersfield Police Department’s online services. They claim they have improved their reporting system. Check it out. Here’s the BPD press release in its entirety:
Although on-line reporting is not new to the Bakersfield Police Department, the service has been improved, expanded, and is easier to use. We accept the following types of reports on-line: harassing phone calls, court order violations (child custody orders), theft, vandalism, hit and run (no injuries/suspects), fraud and financial crimes, identity theft, and lost property.
On-line reporting eliminates waiting for police response and allows the user to immediately file and print a copy of the report. When submitted, the user will receive an email confirmation with a temporary report number and a second confirmation and copy of the official report after it has been reviewed and approved – usually within 24 hours.
People who need to report an incident and do not have access to a computer may call 661-327-7111. There are public computers located in the Kern County libraries and there is a computer located at the Police Department headquarters building (1601 Truxtun Avenue).
Citizens are reminded that the on-line reporting system is for non-emergencies only and if there is an emergency, they should call 911 immediately. Filing a false police report is a crime. All reports are reviewed and system misuse may result in criminal prosecution and/or the user’s IP address blocked from the system.
The web address for the site is www.bakersfieldpd.us
Questions regarding on-line reporting should be directed to the Records Division
at 326-3800 or records@bakersfieldpd.us.

It is wonderful when technology makes it cheaper and easier to enforce the law. I believe the next step Kern County needs to take is to create an electronic reporting system for secondhand dealers and pawn shops…this way all law enforcement can check police reports with pawns and buys around the county.
