It’s already a day of car fires and fatal traffic accidents on July Fourth weekend.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Highway 46 was closed in both directions early Friday morning after a fatal crash around 6 a.m. Westbound Highway 46 was closed at Highway 33. Eastbound traffic was stopped at Highway 41.
KGET reported the CHP told them one person was ejected and killed just after a 6 a.m. fiery crash between a Honda and a big rig hauling lettuce and strawberries.
The CHP Web site said the rig’s cab burst into flames and that the rig would have to be emptied of its lettuce and strawberries before it could be moved.
Highway 46 is estimated to be reopened at 2 p.m.
A detour has been set up from Highway 46 to Highway 33 to Highway 41, and back to Highway 46. Expect 30 to 60 minutes added from Bakersfield to coastal areas.
The CHP urged drivers to consider alternate routes, such as Highway 58 or Highway 166.
Reports of cars on fire and a crash on Highway 99 were also reported by the CHP.
