A fire on Buck Owens Boulevard in Bakersfield on Wednesday afternoon caused an estimated $1 million in damage.
The Kern County Fire Department said that at 3:09 p.m., a grass fire was reported along northbound Highway 99 at the Airport Drive exit. Officials said were faced with a grass fire that was spreading to trees at the rear of Valley Cycles and Boot Barn on Buck Owens Blvd.
Officials said that while a KCFD hand crew battled the grass fire, wind blew fire brands onto stored vehicles and packaging materials at the side of Valley Cycles.
The next arriving crews attacked the fire to prevent its spread to the main structure. With the building threatened, fire crews and staff began salvage operations by moving products to the front of the store.
Fire crews were able to save an estimated $5 million to the structure and contents. An estimated $1 million in property and contents was destroyed. Approximately 40 Kern County Firefighters responded to the incident, assisted by firefighters from Bakersfield City Fire Department.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, officials said. However, the Kern County Fire Department would like to remind residents of the dangers of grass fires which can be very easily started by even the smallest spark or carelessly discarded cigarette.
