JULY 4TH IN BAKERSFIELD: What’s There To Do?

Fourth of July in Bakersfield is always a time of fanatical pride (You love it), fireworks on city streets and big events that always end with a blast. OK, so it ends with a fine for some because of illegal fireworks. But other than that, people are celebrating with style! There are a few events going on in town, though you might want to take a road trip for added flavor.

LOCAL FOURTH OF JULY FESTIVITIES:

FIREWORK BOOTHS:
These booths are everywhere. Pick a charity then go spend some cash on some sparklers and fiery fountains. The booths opened on July 1.

JULY 2
CONCERT BY THE FOUNTAIN: Join Donahue-Scribner, Russo’s Books and other merchants at The Marketplace for a free concert for the entire family. The concert is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the big fountain at The Marketplace.

JULY 3 – Friday fun events: Buttonwillow Recreation and Park District at Buttonwillow High School; City of Shafter at Shafter High School; McFarland Activities Committee at McFarland High School.

JULY 4 – BAKERSFIELD BLAZE: There’s nothing more filled with pride than the American game of baseball. On Saturday, July 4, the Bakersfield Blaze who are affiliated with the Texas Rangers, take on the Stockton Ports at historic Sam Lynn Ballpark at 7:45 p.m. Fireworks will be BLAZE-ing at the end of the game.

JULY 4 – MEMORIAL STADIUM: I remember going to one of these stadium events as a kid and watching a tree at the end of the stadium catch on fire. Not only did I get to see fireworks, I got to see the fire department in action! This fireworks extravaganza features the Grammy-nominated band Sanctus Real. Rumor has it Lost Ocean is performing as well. Read all about guitarist Pete Prevost of Bakersfield in Sanctus Real. Get tickets.

JULY 4 – Here’s a list of some other Kern County July 4th events: Wasco Park & Recreation District at Wasco Ballpark; City of Tehachapi at 115 Robinston Street South in Tehachapi; Bakersfield Country Club at 4200 Country Club Drive in Bakersfield; Arvin Exhcange Club at Arvin High School football field; Taft District Chamber of Commerce at West Side Cemetery.

JULY 5 – Better late than never, right? Check them out: Lake Isabella Chamber of Commerce at Engineers Point; Kiwanis Club of Delano at Delano Airport; Bakersfield Speedway at Bakersfield Speedway.

OUT OF TOWN EXCURSIONS:

PISMO: Grab the family for a day trip to this popular Central Coast destination. You probably won’t get a hotel because of all the tourists. But Fourth of July on the beach is always a good time. Watch for humpback whales hopping out of the water.

ROSE BOWL: Think Memorial Stadium is too small for your big Fourth of July taste? Travel down to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena for their 83rd celebration there.

PACIFIC PALISADES PARADE: Need more fanfare during daylight hours? Try this seaside town parade followed by fireworks at a nearby high school. Check it out.

MARINA DEL REY FIREWORKS OVER THE SEA: Now you’re talking upscale patriotic celebration. Combine water and fireworks and you’re going to have a really great time. Eat hearty. Enjoy. Details. Don’t forget the nearby Marinapalooza.

*Keep checking back. If we find another event, we’ll add it!

    Rumor? What rumor? :)

Lost Ocean got the gig for the fireworks show not too long ago. Some other band was supposed to play, but they backed out, so they had to find someone else. Family connections at the fire department wound up suggesting Lost Ocean, so that’s how it happened. I was going to e-mail you and let you know, Nick, but I forgot and hadn’t gotten to it yet. You should go if you have the time.

I haven’t been to the BC fireworks show since I was 4 years old, although I’ve been to the Shafter show many times and can see the fireworks from my house. I’m excited about going this year and getting tons of pictures from the concert and the fireworks.

I’m happy for Lost Ocean. I hope the sound is good and that Jeff can still shred on the guitar in the awful heat!
