It looked like the Bakersifeld Condors could have used a bit of NFL quarterback David Carr’s motivational speech before their shootout loss on Saturday afternoon. Carr, who is currently a back-up quarterback with the New York Giants, spoke after the Bakersfield loss. He also dropped the ceremonial puck before the start of the game.
It was the perfect afternoon outside the Rabobank Arena with Bakersfield Condors and New York Giants fans in attendance to hear Carr talk about life, love, inspiration and football in front of a packed crowd.
Carr told several light-hearted stories including one about how he met his future wife at church camp right before his standout career at Fresno State. He said he didn’t want to go to the camp but did anyway. It took him until the last day of camp but finally got his wife’s phone number, he said.
He said he gave his heart to Christ at the age of twelve. “Anybody that has known me for any length of time knows that my faith is probably my strongest part, just of my overall being,” Carr said. He added later in his speech, “To think that I did it all myself would be arrogant.”
Carr said he credits his relationship with God as helping him with his career in the NFL. He said while it was harder in high school to show his Christian faith, it got easier in college, and once he got in the NFL he found some of the most spiritual people he knows.
Carr added that with some of the hits he took while in Houston, it’s a miracle he is healthy as well.
Asked what advice would he would give people who need to make good choices in life, Carr said: “It’s hard when you’re young to see into the future, to see where you want to be. But that’s kind of what you have to do. And that’s what I did.” Carr gave credit to his father working with him so much in football. He said when he was young he would often throw footballs with his dad rather than go and party with teens.

Carr said he was really little in high school but had a great work ethic. He said people can do whatever they want in life if they are committed to their goals.
Carr also talked about teens making poor choices. He said he was at a party in high school when other kids chose drugs and he didn’t. He said one of his friends from that party died and another is in Teen Challenge recovering. Carr said, “If you just keep your head on straight and you do things right, God is going to find a way to bless you.”
Carr added that he has one year left on his contract with the New York Giants but that he wants to eventually start for another team. He also said the Giants are the best team in the world to play for.

What a shame….there was nothing “motivational” about that. He’s a handsome and seemingly sweet guy…but so mindless. Motivation would be about education, about thinking, contributing….not such drivel.
RJ: I thought that telling people they can do whatever they set their mind to do was motivational. He mentioned he didn’t think he was the best athlete in the world. Maybe he isn’t, but he is determined, and I agree that determination and hard work can really pay off in any walk of life.
I think a lot of people in every career get lazy, don’t set goals, and have imaginary obstacles in their lives. Just my thoughts.
O my gosh! Motivational?, would you like him to do your job for you too? He spoke on where he has been and what choices his friends made compared to his and look where he is now. HE HAS WORKED HIS BUTT OFF, that should be motivational enough, he is not a raw raw guy that sings songs and has people chant, he is a down to earth guy that wanted to thank you guys for coming out and supporting him. Motivation? give me a break, motivate your self, he is not a motivational speaker he is a football player with tons of ups and downs.
Doesn’t everybody have ups and downs? I don’t know him. I just heard his speech. No, he’s not well spoken. But that’s OK. He gave it a good try and I’m betting someone in the audience was motivated. I was. Being successful at what I do has ups and downs and is dependent on hard work, relationship building and some luck. I can associate with that.
If you want motivation think of the cash you will be getting at the end of the week for doing what your doing. ..hahaha
Dan, no really, Darren,
David did a great job with his talk. Please note: It’s “rah-rah” not “raw, raw.”
Dude, learn to spell.
RJ
His motivation…..(I guess you missed it)…..is his faith in Christ without which none of the rest really matters.
