Phil Prevost’s List Of Bakersfield’s Best French Fries

Phil Prevost, guitarist of Bakersfield band The Blufs, and French Fry afficionado, has provided an excellent guide to Bakersfield, Calif. French Fries. He has carefully selected his favorites from personal experience. See if you agree.

Important: Prevost says the key to great French Fries is to state “well done” or “extra crispy” at the time of your order (It’s the best way to guarantee perfect fries).

1. Golden Ox (White Lane) – Best Fries in Bakersfield!! The traditional Thick-Cut with seasoning lightly sprinkled over. I ate these a minimum of five times a week while I was in high school. The customer service is a little tricky. My friends and I referred to the owner as the Ox Nazi (It was the Nineties).

2. Root Beer King (Niles Street) – Would be my first if I didn’t have so much nostalgia tied to the Ox. Crinkle-cut with lots of seasoning on them. I’ve eaten at the Lamont location, but this locale is much better. My wife calls these “healing fries” because they have medicinal properties. These fries cheer you up!

3. Cindy’s Restaurant (Auburn Street) – Since this place is open 24 hours, it’s the best place to go for fries in the middle of the night (Zingo’s is filthy and In-N-Out has fries that are too fresh). A large order is a huge plate of long Steak-Cut fries.

4. Checkers Drive-In (Calloway Drive)
– I know this is a chain, but man these fries are so good. Thick-cut with a black pepper batter, so good. What a bummer it was when all the Rally’s closed in Bakersfield a few years ago, but the fries are back and the only thing different is the name.

5. Super Tom’s Burgers (Roberts Lane) – Another from the Crinkle-cut persuasion. Only, slightly thinner than most other places (but not as slender as Del Taco fries, which are also very good). This is my current favorite. The cups here are fragile though, so be careful or you’ll have Dr. Pepper fries (true story).

Other Great Fry Spots:
34th Street Car Wash
Home of the Big-O-Burger
John’s Burgers
La Colonia Mexican Restaurant
Tommie’s Hamburgers

In-n-Out french fries are my favorite…they use locally grown Bako potatoes. No frozen processed yuck from Idaho. Support your local farmers: Eat In-n-Out!

Um… I don't know about those fry places. my faves are still frosty king's crinkle fries…

You need to try the fries at Cue Ball (Rosedale Hwy).

I have to say Cris Cut Fries at Chick Fil A are just the most amazing fries in forever….don’t forget the Polynesian Sauce!

  5. Phil Prevost says:

Frosty King used to be my favorite crinkle fry (I tried them again last week), but once you've had Root Beer King's there's no turning back. I'll have to try Cue Ball, but I'm sorry to say I'm not a fan of Chick-Fil-A, its like Carl's Jr. without seasoning.

Bakersfield doesn't have my favorite fries by the way. The best french fries in the state are at the Firestone Grill in San Luis Obispo. Super skinny with seasoning salt. So delicious, and they give you a ton.
The Doghouse Grill in Fresno and the Main Street Grill in Cambria all have the same owners, so all three are my favorite, but I've eaten at Firestone the most.

Thanks for a job well done, Phil. I have to agree with you and your wife about the benefits of eating fries from the root beer king. They are amazing!
